Day-by-Day Itinerary

During this excursion, you will drive from the city of Huaraz through the beautiful Callejon de Huaylas valley in Huascaran National Park, where you will also see the peaks of the mountain of the same name. At 6,768 meters, this mountain in Huascaran National Park is the highest mountain in Peru.

You pay a short visit to the town of Carhuaz, which has a beautiful central square (Plaza de Armas). Next, you visit the town of Yungay. This town was completely destroyed under an avalanche of rubble during the tragic earthquake of 1970. The site of the earthquake is marked by a large statue of Christ. Only the top of the cathedral on the former central square and the tops of a number of former palm trees still rise above the rubble. A large number of the town's inhabitants were buried alive, and a total of about 50,000 people perished during this earthquake.

More from Llanganuco

Finally, you will visit Lake Chinacocha, better known as Lake Llanganuco. On this beautiful turquoise mountain lake, nestled between surrounding mountain ranges, it is possible to take a boat trip (optional).
If time permits, you can pay a short visit to the town of Tarica, a town known for its locally made handicrafts. You will end this tour to Huascaran National Park back in the city of Huaraz.
